After working for the WCIA, she started working for Congressman Scott McInnis (R-CO) in Washington, D.C., where she served as a staff assistant. Following this job, she served four precious years as the press secretary for Rep.
However, in 1998, Dana Perino moved to Great Britain with her husband, Peter McMahon, just after Schaefer announced his retirement. Only after three years, Perino returned to Washington, D.C., and served two years as the spokesperson for the Department of Justice.
After working for the Department of Justice, she was appointed as the Associate director of communications, in 2002, for the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), where her role was to provide necessary advice on media and public relations, message development, and outreach.
Only two months after the September 11 attacks, Perino was hired by the White House chief of staff, Andy Card. At first, she was appointed as the Associate director of communications for the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) but was later promoted to Deputy Press Secretary in 2005.
She served in the position for two years. She was also the Acting White House Press Secretary from March 27, 2007, to April 30, 2007, because of Tony Show’s treatment for colon cancer.
In the same year, on August 31, 2007, Dana Perino was appointed by President George W. Bush as the replacement for Tony Show as he had to resign from the post due to health reasons. So, Perino worked in the same position from September 14, 2007, till the end of the Bush administration in January 2009.
