Michael Oher Early Life, Family & Struggles

Michael Jerome Williams, Jr. was born on May 28, 1986, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Michael Jerome Williams and Denise Oher. He is one of twelve siblings. His mom was an alcoholic, and his dad spent the majority of his time in prison; thus, he did not obtain much attention as a child. Michael’s father was slain in prison when he was in high school.

Oher failed in first and second grade and had to move schools several times. He was placed in foster care when he was eleven years old and has lived with several foster parents since then.

He loved playing football as a high schooler. He enrolled at the ‘Briarcrest Christian School’ on the advice of a friend, Tony Henderson. Coach Hugh Freeze and Tim Long helped Oher improve his football talents, and he was named Div II (2A) Lineman of the Year in 2003.

In 2004, he was placed in the responsibility of Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy, who already had a boy and a daughter who attended ‘Briarcrest Christian School.’ The couple later adopted Oher.

As a result, he received the care and attention he needed as a child. His requirements were met, and he was even given training in sports such as basketball and track. He worked as a student and received outstanding grades, allowing him to enroll in a Division I school of the ‘National Collegiate Athletic Association‘ (NCAA).

Michael Oher’s Professional Football Career

He earned scholarship offers from schools such as Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn, South California, and Louisiana State. Yet, he opted to play for the ‘University of Mississippi,’ where Ed Orgeron coached him.

As a result, he began playing football with the Ole Miss Rebels. He began his career as a guard for the squad and was selected Freshman All-America.

He was moved to left tackle during the 2006 season. After his sophomore season, he was selected as an offensive lineman of the 2nd team ‘Southeastern Conference’ (SEC) and an offensive tackle of the first-team ‘SEC’ after his junior season. He also progressed intellectually throughout this time.

Michael Oher dropped out of the ‘2008 NFL (National Football League) Draft’ and joined the senior team of the ‘Ole Miss Rebels.’ He was selected first-team All-American at the end of the season. He finished his criminal justice degree the following year.

He was chosen by the ‘Baltimore Ravens in the ‘2009 NFL Draft,’ and was later handed a jersey with the number 74 on it and a contract with the ‘Baltimore Ravens’.

He started the 2009 season as a right tackle, then switched to the left tackle position before returning to the right tackle position.

Michael Oher was moved to right tackle for the 2010 season, and the Ravens defeated the ‘New England Patriots’ 33-14. His team announced that he’d be playing right tackle the next season.

Oher signed a 2-year, $7 million contract with Carolina Panthers on March 6, 2015. Despite his problems in Tennessee, Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman claimed Oher would be the Panthers’ starting left tackle heading into the season. “We conducted our research on Michael and are confident he will provide us with a solution. We’ll put him in at left tackle and go from there.”

Cam Newton was a big reason for Oher’s choice to join Carolina, and he reacted by having one of his greatest seasons as a pro, shielding Newton’s blind side. Oher appeared in 98.4% of a team’s snaps, surrendered a chosen professional four sacks (tied for eighth in the league), and was only penalized three times.

Oher was a member of the Panthers team who won Super Bowl 50 on February 7, 2016. The Panthers were defeated by the Denver Broncos 24–10 in the game.

On June 17, 2016, Oher and the Panthers agreed to a three-year possible extension for $21.6 million, with $9.5 million guaranteed.

Oher was put on injured reserve with a concussion on November 25, 2016, after appearing only in three games during the 2016 season. After a failed physical, the Panthers released Oher on July 20, 2017.
