Virginia was a burlesque dancer who rose to the top of the burlesque scene in 1954, earning up to $1500 per week. She was well-known for her cowboy striptease act. Bell was featured in various 8mm loop videos, numerous men’s publications such as Night and Day and, Fling, and exotic dance.
Bell also appeared in the film Bell, Bare and Beautiful (1963). Eli Jackson, the proprietor of a burlesque theater, had approached exploitation directors Herschell Gordon Lewis and David Friedman about shooting a film about his wife.
Lewis remembers Bell being pregnant, saying, “I guess it was her first pregnancy because no one was sure she’d come out of it and still be able to perform in burlesque.” These men wanted to shoot her once she lost her physique.
Virginia would return in Lullaby of Bareland (1964) in the form of three shorter portions patched together to fill out the runtime. Virginia provides a lengthy striptease routine.
