DeMille was born on August 23, 1943, in New York City, USA. He and his family moved to Long Island when he was a child. He went to Elmont Memorial High School, where he ran track and played football.

He joined the Army after three years at Hofstra University and attended Officer Candidate School. He served in the US Army as a First Lieutenant from 1966 to 1969, serving as an infantry platoon leader with the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam.

He was given the Combat Infantryman Badge and received the Air Medal, Bronze Star, and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

DeMille returned to the United States and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from Hofstra University. Lauren, Alexander, and James are his three children. He is currently based in Garden City, New York.

DeMille’s first works were detective novels set in New York City. By the Rivers of Babylon, his first major novel, was released in 1978 and is still in print, as are all of his subsequent novels.
