Early Stage & Family Info

Eddie Van Halen, the co-founder of the American hard rock band Van Halen, was born on January 26, 1955. He was a Dutch-American vocalist, composer, and producer. He was regarded as one of the outstanding guitarists globally.

In 2011, the magazine “Rolling Stone” named him number eight, while fans of “The Guitar World” magazine voted him number one in “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.”

Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was born in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, on January 26, 1955, to a Dutch father, Jan van Halen, a clarinetist, saxophone, and pianist, and an Indonesian-born Eurasian mother, Eugenia van Halen (née van Beers).

They migrated to the United States in 1962, and Eddie and his older brother both obtained US citizenship through naturalization. The family eventually made their home in Pasadena, California.

Stasys (Stanley) Kalvaitis, who taught them classical piano in San Pedro, brought the Van Halen brothers to music. They didn’t like it but persevered because of their mother’s rigorous discipline. Van Halen admitted that he’d never comprehended the music throughout one of the discussions.

Instead, he picked up knowledge through listening and seeing. Eddie won the annual piano competition at Long Beach College in 1964 and 1967. As a result, his brother began playing the guitar, and Eddie purchased a drum kit to practice.

They formed “The Broken Combs band” and performed at Hamilton Elementary School, where Van Halen was a fourth-grader. Here, he developed a strong desire to pursue a career as a musician.

Eddie Van Halen’s Career

Eddie Van Halen founded Mammoth alongside his brother Alex, bassist Mark Stone, and vocalist David Lee Roth. In 1972, the band’s name was changed to Van Halen, and Michael Anthony replaced Mark Stone.

Ted Templeton, a record producer, heard the band in 1977 and helped them get a deal with Warner Brothers Records. Van Halen, their debut album, was released in 1978 and reached No. 19 on the Billboard Albums Chart, eventually earning them a Diamond certification.

In 1979, they released Van Halen II, which did even better than the first, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard charts. Dance the Night Away and Beautiful Girls were among the singles featured.

Women and Children First, their third studio album, was released in 1980. The band members wrote the lyrics entirely, and the music was distinct from what had been heard on previous albums.

Fair Warning was released in 1981, followed by River Down in 1982. Both albums have been certified Multi-Platinum in the United States and Platinum in Canada.

The band’s most commercially significant album was 1984, released in the same year as the name. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts and gave birth to Jump and Panama singles.

By 1986, the band’s lineup had changed: singer Sammy Hagar had taken over for David Lee Roth. 5150 was Hagar’s first album, and it, like its predecessors, was a great hit.

The band’s best years were the 1980s, when each album was a smash hit with the public. In the 1990s, they only released three albums, two of which went multi-platinum: For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991) and Balance (1995).

Eddie had a rough time in the new millennium, as he was dealing with several personal and health issues, including a cancer diagnosis and divorce. During the decade, the band did not release any albums.

After a long hiatus, the band released A Different Kind of Truth in 2012, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Albums Chart in the United States.

Relationship, Wife & Children

Eddie Van Halen dated actress Valerie Bertinelli after one of their Louisiana gigs, and the two wed on April 11, 1981, in California. Wolfgang, their son, was born in 1991. He divorced his wife in December 2005 for various reasons, many of which stemmed from his alcoholism.

Van proposed to and married his actor and stunt woman girlfriend, Janie Liszewski, simultaneously on October 6, 2008, and June 27, 2009.

His son Wolfgang and ex-wife Valarie were amongst the attendees at the wedding ceremony, which took place at his Studio City estate. Van Halen and his son joined Valarie Bertinelli’s wedding on January 1, 2011.

Works in the Humanitarian Sector
