Eisler was born in New Jersey, where his father was a wholesale office supply distributor, and his mother was an environmental activist. Eisler earned his law degree from Cornell University in 1989.

Eisler joined the CIA after finishing law school, trained for three years, and held a covert position with the Directorate of Operations.
He resigned in 1992 and joined Weil, Gotshal & Manges law firm. He relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1994 to work for the firm’s technology licensing division, then left for Matsushita in Japan.
He returned to the Bay Area in 1999 to work for a startup.
He began writing full-time in 2003 when he sold the rights to his debut novel, Rain Fall, the first in his John Rain series.
Eisler made headlines in March 2011 when he turned down a reported $500,000 advance from St. Martin’s Press to pursue the self-publishing path pioneered by his colleague Joe Konrath and others.
He then signed a six-figure deal to publish The Detachment (2011), the seventh John Rain novel, under Amazon Publishing’s Thomas & Mercer mystery imprint.
Eisler changed the titles and covers of all the Rain books, as well as the covers of the Treven books, after amicably terminating his previous publishing contracts and regaining his rights.
Sony Pictures Japan released a mostly Japanese version of Rain Fall in April 2009, starring Shiina Kippei as Rain and Gary Oldman as Rain’s adversary, CIA Station Chief William Holtzer.
Rain, a new TV mini-series based on the book, was announced in August 2014 by Slingshot Global Media. Along with Eisler, Chad Stahelski, and David Leitch, Keanu Reeves will play the iconic character and serve as executive producer. The scriptwriter has yet to be chosen.
